In short

Two tours, one trip

You climb Kilimanjaro on the Marangu route, with huts and an acclimatisation day, and the day after coming down you move on to Arusha, where the safari starts. In 15 days you reach Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 m, and then Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Mara river and the Ngorongoro crater.

The programme links the two tours without losing a day: the night of 19 September in Arusha and the transfer from Moshi are included in the price of the combined trip. The details of each part are on the pages Kilimanjaro and Safari in Tanzania.

We head north through the Lobo Valley. The plain gives way to hills, and along the way we see the animals that live in the area all year round and, if the migration is passing through, the wildebeest herds moving towards the Kenyan border. We reach the Mara river area in the late afternoon, a river full of hippos and crocodiles.

We have the whole day for the Mara river area and the plains of the northern Serengeti. If the wildebeest herds are nearby, we wait on the bank for the moment they start to cross, through the current, steep banks and Nile crocodiles. If not, the guide takes us wherever the animals are that day. This is the day worth the patience and a good telephoto lens.

On Kilimanjaro you pass through four climate zones in a few days, from the rainforest to the ice on the summit. What matters is layers you put on and take off along the way, not one very heavy coat. On the Marangu route you sleep in huts, in beds with mattresses, so you don't need a sleeping mat.

  2. 2,800-4,000 mMoorlandCool days, cold nights: a fleece layer.

Tips

  • The guides check your gear the evening before the climb, at the hotel in Moshi. Anything missing can be rented there: sleeping bag, down jacket, poles, gaiters.
  • Whatever you don't need on the mountain stays at the hotel in Moshi until you come down.
  • Break in your boots for at least two weeks before you leave, and pack a full set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag for summit day.
  • No cotton: once it is wet with sweat, it stays wet and cold.

How payment and the group discount work
Deposit and payment

The balance can be paid in full or in instalments agreed together, by the date in the card.

Group discount

The group discount applies to each tour separately: if, 60 days before departure, the Kilimanjaro group or the safari group has at least 10 participants with the deposit paid, you get a €100 discount on that tour, so up to €200 in total. The discount comes off the last payment or instalment, and if you have already paid in full, we refund the amount by bank transfer within 14 days.

What is holding you back?

The price. You do not pay it all at once: first the deposit, then the balance, in full or in instalments we agree on (the amounts and dates are in the card). If the group reaches 10 participants, you also get the group discount.

See what the price includes

The effort. The programme has acclimatisation days and a pace meant for ordinary people, not athletes. I will tell you honestly whether the tour suits you and how to prepare.
